What is academic service learning?

Academic service learning is a credit-bearing educational experience in which
students participate in organized service activities that address
community-identified concerns while addressing the specific goals and
objectives of the course.  A service learning course typically requires a
minimum number of service hours with selected community-based
organizations and schools.  Students formally reflect on the service experience
to gain further understanding of the course content and an enhanced sense of
civic engagement and responsibility.  Supporting service learning endeavors
increases community involvement in educational institutions; thus, assisting to
ensure that the region's work force and citizenry is well-educated and
employable.

Service learning adds valuable resources to the community.
